"This book is set in 2015 and is about a character named Lucy Selberg, who works at a bookstore in downtown Toronto and is starting a career as a writer. She tries hard to be a good friend and to follow the rules in a world where the rules, particularly for young women, are constantly changing. She discovers a fictional cult teen magazine from the 1970s called SMASH and decides to write about it, but when she travels to Los Angeles to research the story, she discovers that the people working behind the scenes at the magazine treated the young women who worked there badly.
