Summary
The last thing anyone would want to be is the face of January 6th, but that's what Michael Fanone is. He's the tattooed D.C. Metropolitan police officer who self-deployed and got to the front of the line defending the Capitol and held it, urging his fellow officers on as they pushed back against the insurrectionists until he was pulled into the mob and tased, causing him to suffer a heart attack, and was viciously beaten with the pole of a Blue Lives Matter flag as the throng around him cheered and yelled to "kill him with his own gun." In this book, Fanone discusses a lot more than January 6th, speaking to many of our country's most critical issues, from police reform to race and more. Though he's a self-described redneck who voted for Trump, he's more complex than he appears at first glance. He also voted for Obama for two terms, and recognized Trump's con not long after he cast his 2016 vote. Fanone's closest friend was an informant - a Black, transgender, HIV-positive woman whom he credits with helping him mature and transform throughout his career. Though it's cost Fanone everything - the work he loved, most of his friends, and his health - he will never stop speaking the truth about January 6th. He's determined to never let anyone forget what really happened that day - the day he was almost murdered by the mob, the day that could have been a bloodbath on an unimaginable scale, the day that could have cost us our democracy. The Republicans are pushing the Big Lie, attempting to gaslight the country. Fanone calls it what it is: sedition
