Summary
Colorado, 1918. The First World War is raging overseas, but on the home front people are dying, too. The Spanish influenza is rampant. People are dropping dead in churches and on streetcars. Horse-drawn wagons collect corpses left out in the street. Lutie Hite, an advertising designer at a fashionable women's store, and her sister, Helen, a nurse, have been trying to go on with their lives. Then one day Lutie comes home to find a dead man on the kitchen floor and Helen standing over him with a knife. The deceased is the abusive father of a young girl they have taken in after her mother, Lutie and Helen's tenant, died of the flu. With the help of Helen's fiancé, Gil, Lutie leaves the man's body in the street, hoping to disguise it as a flu victim, but the authorities have questions. . . With the influenza raging around them, Lutie fears for those she loves, including her fiancé "over there." His mother, who harbors a secret of her own, helps the sisters as the danger deepens from both the murder investigation and the pandemic
