Summary
Beautiful, sharp-tongued Nahr tells her life story from an Israeli solitary-confinement cell, recounting how she went from working in beauty salons to being locked up as a political prisoner. As a girl, she dreamed of marriage and modern apliances. As a woman, she finds herself an abandoned wife at not quite twenty years old, tricked into work as an escort for powerful men at late-night parties - until the US invasion of Iraq makes her family refugees again. Displaced and bewildered in Jordan, Nahr travels to Palestine seeking a divorce from the man who disappeared on her. She arrives wholly unprepared to confront the consequences of the secret that defined her past. But there, in the bosom of her homeland, Nahr is transformed by the power of her roots, literature, and love. She emerges fully formed: foul-mothed critic; passionate dancer; and radical political thinker who risks everything to return her family to their nativ eland. Her fate fulfills her own prophecy that "the freest individuals were the ones who ended up in state prisons."
