Summary
It's another week in Benson, Indiana - population 3,891 - and Jenny Newberg, down-on-her-luck, beautiful, broke single mom, has apologized for her existence more times than she can count. Saying "I'm sorry" comes as naturally to Jenny as breathing. So, unfortunately, does bad decision-making and even worse luck. Just ask her chain-smoking mother, Carla, who's all too happy to point out that Jenny is where she is - barely able to afford her mortgage payments, let alone the computer her precocious young daughter, Billie Starr, wants for Christmas - thanks to a litany of foolish mistakes. Jenny's best friend, Lyd, and her former boss, Bob Butz, would agree. What Jenny really needs to do, according to the many critics in her life, is wise up. If not for her sake, for Billie Starr's. Then Jenny meets a man - charming, well connected - she thinks might solve all her problems. What could possibly go wrong? Everything, of course. And when Billie Starr's well-being is threatened, Jenny can't wait around for a savior anymore. She is forced to do something she never thought herself capable of: trust in her own power to make things right
